Think of the datacard as the car’s factory file
A Mercedes-Benz datacard brings together the identity and factory configuration associated with one chassis. Depending on the vehicle, it can include model designation, production information, paint, interior trim and a satisfyingly long list of option and control codes.
It is not a brochure of everything that could be ordered. It belongs to the individual VIN, which is what makes it useful when two outwardly similar Mercedes models have very different equipment.
Read the identity fields first
Begin with the VIN and model information, then work through production, market, engine, transmission, paint and interior fields where supplied. They set the context for the code list that follows and can quickly highlight a mismatch with the car.
Some descriptions use terse internal language. That does not automatically make them wrong; factories are better known for precise processes than sparkling prose. Keep the production period and delivery market in mind as you read.
The code list is more than optional extras
Mercedes-Benz codes can describe customer equipment, standard fitment, packages, model-year changes, destination markets and production instructions. Counting every line as a paid option will produce an impressively large—and thoroughly misleading—total.
Packages may appear beside the features they include. Read related entries together, especially for equipment such as assistance systems, interior packages and market-specific preparation.
Bring the datacard to the car
Paint and upholstery are natural first checks, followed by visible equipment such as the roof, lighting, seats, audio and driver-assistance hardware. If something differs, ask whether it was repaired, replaced, retrofitted or coded later.
The Mercedes-Benz datacard records the original build. It cannot tell you whether a feature still works, whether software access remains active or how the car has been treated since leaving the factory.
